Cork’s Commercial Electrical Fault Specialists

Haven Electrical carry out commercial distribution board upgrades and systematic electrical fault diagnosis for businesses across Cork City and County. Electrical faults in commercial premises — tripping RCDs, persistent nuisance trips, unexplained power losses, or hot panels — can disrupt operations, damage equipment, and in serious cases present a fire or safety risk. We use systematic diagnostic procedures to locate the root cause of faults, not just reset breakers and hope. We carry out distribution board replacements for aged commercial switchgear, and upgrade older consumer units to comply with current Irish electrical regulations.

What’s Included in Commercial Fault Finding & Board Work

Initial fault diagnostic assessment Systematic inspection and testing to locate the root cause of the fault before any work is done.
Insulation resistance testing Megger testing of circuits to identify deteriorated insulation — the most common cause of tripping RCDs.
Earth fault loop impedance testing Loop impedance measurements to verify circuit protection operates within required times.
Thermal imaging (where required) Thermal camera inspection of distribution boards and connections to identify overheating issues.
Distribution board replacement Full commercial-grade board replacement with correct MCB and RCD protection for each circuit type.
RCD protection upgrade Retrofit of RCD protection to circuits not currently covered — particularly important for older commercial installations.
Circuit labelling and schedule update All circuits correctly labelled and board schedule updated to reflect current installation.
Full testing after remediation All affected circuits retested and confirmed safe before sign-off.
RECI certificate on completion Certificate of compliance issued for all distribution board upgrade work.

Why Cork Businesses Choose Haven Electrical

Root Cause, Not Symptoms

Resetting a tripping breaker doesn’t fix the problem. We find the underlying fault — whether it’s deteriorated insulation, a failing appliance, or an overloaded circuit — and fix it properly.

Minimise Downtime

We work quickly and systematically to minimise the time your circuits are offline. We’ll explain what we’re finding and get your agreement before carrying out any remedial work.

Commercial Board Experience

Commercial distribution boards are more complex than domestic consumer units. We’ve worked on main and sub-distribution boards across Cork commercial and industrial premises for 15+ years.

Full Certification

Every distribution board upgrade is fully tested and RECI certified. You have the documentation you need for insurance and compliance.

Commercial Fault Finding & Fuse Boards FAQs

RCDs trip when they detect a fault current to earth — typically caused by damaged cable insulation, a faulty appliance, moisture ingress in a fitting or socket, or an overloaded circuit. The most common cause in commercial premises is degraded insulation in old wiring or a single faulty piece of equipment. We carry out systematic insulation testing to isolate which circuit or equipment is causing the trip, rather than guessing or isolating circuits one by one until the tripping stops.
Yes — replacing aged commercial distribution boards is one of our most common commercial jobs. Older boards may use obsolete MCBs that are no longer manufactured, have inadequate RCD protection, or lack the capacity for additional circuits. A modern commercial distribution board provides correct circuit protection for every circuit type, RCD protection as required by current regulations, and the capacity for future modifications. All board upgrades are RECI certified.
Thermal imaging uses an infrared camera to detect heat sources in electrical installations without contact or dismantling. Overloaded connections, failing MCBs, and deteriorating busbars all produce elevated temperatures that are invisible to the naked eye but clearly visible on a thermal camera. We use thermal imaging for distribution board surveys and for investigating persistent electrical problems where visual inspection hasn’t identified the cause.
Yes — intermittent faults are often the hardest to diagnose. They may appear at specific times of day, under certain load conditions, or only when equipment has been running for some time. We use a combination of insulation testing, loop impedance measurement, visual inspection, and thermal imaging to build a picture of where the fault is likely to be. For faults that only appear under load, we may need to attend when the fault conditions are active.
A straightforward fault where the tripping circuit is known and the fault is on a single cable or appliance can often be isolated and repaired in 2–4 hours. Complex faults involving multiple circuits, intermittent behaviour, or large premises can take longer. We provide a time estimate after the initial diagnostic assessment and get your agreement before proceeding with any work beyond the initial diagnosis.
Yes — surge protection devices (SPDs) can be installed at the main distribution board to protect sensitive commercial equipment from mains voltage transients. Transient overvoltages are a common cause of damage to electronic equipment and control systems. We specify and install Type 1 and Type 2 SPDs as appropriate for the installation. Surge protection is particularly recommended for premises with significant IT equipment, PLC-controlled machinery, or sensitive process control systems.
Yes — we offer out-of-hours emergency response for commercial premises with urgent electrical faults. For contract customers, we have an agreed out-of-hours call-out arrangement. For one-off emergency calls, we respond as quickly as possible subject to availability. Call 021 203 2045 and we’ll do our best to assist.
A commercial distribution board should be replaced when: the MCBs or RCDs are no longer available as spares; the board has insufficient capacity for current or planned circuits; the board has inadequate RCD coverage compared with current regulations; internal components show significant degradation; or the board has been involved in a serious overload or fault condition. We assess the existing board before recommending replacement — if it can be economically repaired or upgraded rather than replaced, we’ll say so.
