Cork’s Trusted Electrical Fault Specialists

Haven Electrical carry out electrical fault finding for homes and businesses across Cork City and County. Electrical faults — tripping RCDs, circuit breakers that won’t hold, flickering lights, burning smells, total power loss — need to be diagnosed systematically, not guessed at. We use calibrated test equipment and a structured approach to isolate the root cause of the fault, whether it’s deteriorated insulation, a faulty appliance, a damaged cable, a loose connection, or a failing protection device. We carry out the remedial works ourselves and issue a certificate confirming the installation is safe.

What’s Included in Electrical Fault Finding

Initial assessment and fault description We take a detailed description of the fault symptoms — when it happens, which circuits are affected, any recent changes.
Visual inspection Visual check of consumer unit, wiring, accessories, and any recently installed equipment for obvious signs of fault.
Isolation and identification Systematic isolation of circuits to identify which circuit or section contains the fault.
Insulation resistance testing Megger testing on suspect circuits to identify deteriorated or damaged insulation.
Earth fault loop impedance testing Loop impedance tested to verify fault protection is operating correctly.
Appliance and equipment testing Portable appliance testing where a faulty appliance is suspected as the fault source.
Thermal imaging (where required) Thermal camera inspection for overheating connections or components not visible to the eye.
Remedial works Repair or replacement of the faulty component, cable section, or accessory.
Post-repair test and verification Full test of repaired circuits to confirm the fault is resolved and installation is safe.

Why Cork Customers Choose Haven Electrical

Systematic Approach

We diagnose faults methodically. Random replacement of parts without diagnosis wastes your money and often doesn’t fix the problem. We find the cause first.

Honest Assessment

If a fault is caused by aged wiring that needs a full or partial rewire rather than a patch repair, we’ll tell you. We don’t carry out temporary fixes that will fail again.

Fast Response

Electrical faults can be inconvenient at best and dangerous at worst. We prioritise urgent fault calls and aim for same-day response across Cork where possible.

Full Certification

Once the fault is resolved, we test and certify the affected circuits. You have documentation that the installation is safe.

Electrical Fault Finding FAQs

RCDs trip when they detect a leakage current to earth above their rated sensitivity (typically 30mA for domestic RCDs). The most common causes are: deteriorated cable insulation on a circuit (insulation breakdown causes leakage current); a faulty appliance connected to the circuit; moisture ingress in a socket, fitting, or outdoor installation; or a faulty RCD that is tripping at below its rated current. We carry out insulation resistance testing on all circuits protected by the tripping RCD to isolate which circuit or appliance is causing the problem.
If a circuit breaker trips repeatedly, do not keep resetting it. Each trip is indicating a fault condition. If the breaker trips immediately on reset, leave it off and call us. If it trips after a period of time or when a particular appliance is used, try disconnecting all appliances from that circuit before resetting — if it holds, the fault is in one of the appliances, not the fixed wiring. If it trips with all appliances disconnected, the fault is in the fixed wiring. Call 021 203 2045 and describe the symptoms.
Intermittent faults are the hardest to diagnose because the fault condition isn’t always present when you’re looking for it. We use a combination of insulation resistance testing (which can detect borderline insulation conditions even when not currently leaking), thermal imaging, and careful observation of fault patterns (time of day, temperature, load conditions) to narrow down the location. Sometimes we need to attend during the fault conditions to catch it in the act. We’ll discuss the diagnostic strategy with you before committing to an approach.
Yes — most faults in concealed wiring can be located without opening up the walls. Insulation resistance testing with measured loop impedance values can narrow a fault location on a cable run significantly. For a broken conductor (open circuit fault), TDR (time domain reflectometry) testing can locate the break to within a metre on some cable types. In most cases, we can locate the fault precisely enough to open only the minimum necessary area of wall.
A burning smell from an electrical installation is a serious warning sign and should be treated as an emergency. Switch off the main switch at the consumer unit if it is safe to do so. Do not use the installation until the fault has been found and rectified. Call us on 021 203 2045 immediately — burning smells typically indicate overheating connections or insulation, which can progress rapidly to a fire. This is not a situation to wait and see with.
Yes — DIY electrical work is a common source of faults we’re called to diagnose and rectify. Common issues include incorrect connections, wrong cable sizes, missing earth bonding, and bypassed protection devices. We identify what was done, assess the safety implications, and carry out the remedial works to bring the installation into compliance. We won’t just fix the immediate symptom without addressing the underlying non-compliance.
Fault finding is charged on a time basis, typically with a minimum call-out charge of 1–1.5 hours. Simple faults that are quickly located and resolved (a single faulty appliance, a blown fuse) are often resolved within the minimum charge. Complex intermittent faults, or faults in large or complex installations, may take several hours of investigation. We discuss our rate and minimum charge when you call, so you know what to expect before we arrive.
For intermittent or elusive faults, it is sometimes not possible to definitively identify the cause on a single visit. We document what we found, the test results, and the areas ruled out, and discuss a follow-up strategy. We never charge for work we haven’t done, and we don’t carry out remedial works until we’re confident the fault has been correctly identified. We’d rather be honest about uncertainty than replace components at random until something works.
